How Do B-Rolls & VNRs Differ?

A Video News Release is merely a B-Roll Tape (Please see "B-Rolls" by clicking on the "Services" drop-down menu above) with the addition of a reporter package.

A reporter package is the one to two minute narrated segment that you often see on the news.  So, along with the informational slates, the b-roll and the sound bites (Again, please see "B-Rolls" by clicking on the "Services" drop-down menu above), a WinterMedia VNR includes a pre-produced, narrated synopsis of your story that TV stations can run in its entirety if it chooses.

The VNR also includes a reporter package without narration , in case the television station wants to have one of its reporters or anchors narrate the story.

Just like a B-Roll Tape, WinterMedia generally distributes VNRs via satellite or sends them as hard-copy dubs.  WinterMedia has a contract with Nielsen Media Research to monitor the video so we can report to our clients which stations ran the video and how many viewers saw it.

Do television stations actually use VNRs?

Absolutely. WinterMedia VNRs generally get anywhere from two to 12 million viewers, and sometimes jump as high as 20 to 50 million viewers.  Whether stations merely use the b-roll with a sound bite, or they use the reporter package, there is rarely a newscast aired that doesn't include video from at least one VNR or b-roll tape.
